About:

Xiao is an associate professor in civil engineering at Penn State. His research areas include performances of civil infrastructure and permafrost coastal erosion due to permafrost degradation in the Arctic and their sociodemographic impacts, soil erosion, geosynthetics and their applications, geotechnical earthquake engineering particularly on shake table testing and liquefaction, flow in porous media, geotechnical in situ testing, and geoenvironmental engineering. He has led collaborative and cross-disciplinary research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, Federal Highway Administration, Department of Interior, Departments of Transportation, and industry to address infrastructure systems’ challenges. He has published two books and more than 100 technical papers at peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and technical reports. Xiao was the chair of the Technical Committee of Soil Erosion in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Geo-Institute from 2011 to 2017. He is the chair of the Tenth International Conference on Scour and Erosion in 2020. He is associate editor of the ASCE Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and an editorial board member of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal. He was recipient of the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS) Outstanding Teaching Award and the Harry West Teaching Award in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State. Xiao is a licensed professional engineer in California and Ohio.

Research Interests:

• Performances of civil infrastructures and permafrost coastal erosion due to permafrost degradation in the Arctic and their sociodemographic impacts.
• Performances of the built environment and infrastructure (such as levees, geosynthetically-reinforced bridge abutments, subgrade, coastal infrastructures, coal slurry impoundments) under in-service conditions and natural hazard events
• Seepage and erosion
