About:

Liu is an associate professor of energy and mineral engineering who joined Penn State in 2013. He earned a B.S. in environmental engineering and an M.S. in mineral processing engineering, both from the China University of Mining and Technology in Beijing, and a Ph.D. in engineering science from Southern Illinois University. Liu received the Career Development Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME), and the Kreutzberger Early Career Professorship, Gladys Snyder Grant Award, and Wilson Research Initiation Award from Penn State. He specializes in geomechanics and fluid dynamics and their applications in unconventional resources development, mine ventilation, ground control, flow of fluids in porous media, carbon sequestration, and natural hazard prevention. He has successfully secured funding from various U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the Alpha Foundation, and the SME Foundation and industrial partners. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal publications. He is the editor-in-chief for International Journal of Coal Science and Technology.
